Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient Japanese Art that channels energy through the hands of the practitioner to promote healing and relaxation. It is a laying-on of hands or light touch technique thousands of years old. It is believed to be a Tibetan Buddhist practice that was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk and spiritual scholar.
The word "Reiki" translates as
Rei -- Universality or Spiritual Consciousness, and
Ki -- Life Force,
so Reiki means Universal Life Force Energy.
There are as many reasons for receiving a Reiki treatment as there are people! Some examples to seek out a Reiki treatment include fatigue, physical pain, illness, anxiety/depression, sports injuries and chronic stress. There is no claim that Reiki will heal you, rather it will give your body the energy to better cope with the imbalances and issues it finds itself in. Many people just feel better and that's the simple truth of Reiki energy.
What to expect
During a Reiki treatment the practitioner asks the person to lie down fully clothed (usually on a massage table) and relax. The practitioner places his hands on the person in different positions or the practitioner may use a non-touching technique, where the hands are held a few centimetres away from the person's body, for some or all of the positions.
The hands are usually kept still for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to the next position. Overall, the hand positions usually cover the head, the front and back of the torso, the knees and feet. Between 12 and 20 positions are used, with the whole treatment lasting 45 to 90 minutes.
The person often feels warmth or tingling in the area being treated, even when a non-touching approach is being used. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general feeling of well-being, is usually the most noticeable immediate effect of the treatment.

Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body flush out impurities and get some rest. Listen to your body in terms of what you want to eat -- if you aren't that hungry, eat soups and light meals until you feel you have your appetite back. If you find that you crave certain foods and within reason, please give your body what it wants. It may be trying to tell you that it needs certain nutrients to help with the rebalancing.
