We're kicking off a new series of blog posts called 10 Questions - where we ask the experts about hot topics and get you the information you need to know about your health options.

Today we have Marie Larsson, owner of Toronto Sprouts, answering our questions about incorporating raw foods into your diet.

1. What are Raw Foods?
Food that is not cooked over 115°F.
2. Could you give us some examples?
Veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, and blue green algae.
3. How do I know whether a particular food is safe when raw?
If you recognize it as good: if it looks good, smells good, feels good, and tastes good, then eat it.
4. What are the health benefits of eating raw?
Raw food is enzyme-rich and the vitamins, minerals, oils, and sugars still remain in their natural form. Some of the benefits you will find are: a stronger immune system, feeling more vital, plus they are age-reversing, compassionate, cleansing, and high vibrational.
5. Any downsides or precautions?
Take small steps if you are transitioning to raw food, take digestive enzymes, most of all listen to your own body; apart from "detoxing", it should feel right for you.
Editor's Note: There are a few nutritional precautions to take before moving to a completely raw/vegan diet - work with a health practitioner when making any radical changes to your diet to make sure that you have the right supplements to make up for the loss of certain vitamins such as B-12.
6. Do I have to commit to a vegan lifestyle to reap the benefits?
No. You can get health benefits by incorporating even a few more raw items into your diet.
7. Can I get any health benefits from eating one raw meal a day?
Yes.
8. Should I strictly be eating raw organic foods?
It's up to you. Eat clean, wholesome, local, certified organic foods as much as you can. Put in the right fuel for your engine!
9. Are there any special tips I should know to avoid bacterial contamination?
Buy certified organic products. Wash all produce before you eat it. Food safety is always a concern, so educate yourself and only go to restaurants that have a green card.
10. Where can I find out more information?
Visit www.torontosprouts.com or search the Internet for: raw, living, local, organic, un-cooked etc.
