Gift ideas for people undergoing cancer treatment
Bringing something truly useful to friends and family who have newly received a cancer diagnosis and are starting treatment
What is a good gift for a friend or relative in Chemo or Radiation Therapy? First of all, cross that fruit basket off your list... anything acidic, in fact -- between the sore gums and upset stomach, most people won't be able to enjoy it. Also, no books or magazines unless they're on tape.
Here is a list of supplies suggested by Heather Anne Wakeling, Holistic Health Practitioner and Editor of our book Living Well the Natural Way. It is compiled from her own experience with both chemotherapy and radiation:
Of course, the best gift you can possibly give is your presence - as long as you understand that they cannot entertain you. Allow yourself to sincerely be there, to simply sit in silence and offer them assistance as they may need it. The gift of true friendship is the best gift of all.
Gayle Hurmuses (Editor of our sister site CanadianFoodies.ca) adds a few notes from her experience as a caregiver:
People in Chemo and Radiation are experiencing treatment that leaves their nerves frayed. Loud noises are very hard to take under the circumstances. Remember when offering in-person assistance, that the patient and care-givers may be feeling withdrawn and desirous of privacy. Indicate that you are willing to come in and do these things with a minimum of conversation.
Also, don't forget the care-givers. Remember to ask them how THEY are, and if they need anything for themselves.
