CHFA Top 5 -- Our annual round up of first impressions and favourite finds!
Every year we walk the floor of the Canadian Health Food Association's Expo East to explore what is new in the product world of natural health and green; here's our First Impression Top 5 Lists
Every year when we attend CHFA Expo East we make a quick note of the five finds (not just food) we loved best when walking the floor -- it's about first impressions rather than a slow mulling over of the event overall. And, to be fair, it was pretty impossible to taste and explore everything, so surely there are some items we are going to miss.
As always, there's some overlap between our choices. Check them out, and be sure to look for them in stores!
Gisela's List (In no particular order):
smooze! - These little frozen treats remind me of having Lolas as a child on hot summer days, but instead of being flavoured water, these are fruit in a base of coconut water. Delicious and fun, these little treats provide up to 40% of your daily recommended vitamin C (at least the mango one in my hand does). http://www.smoozeusa.com/
Ontario Natural Food Co-op Soups - fresh, easy, and tasty, I particularly enjoyed the mushroom and tomato soups. They're relatively low in sodium, especially compared to other prepared soups, and made from local organic produce. http://www.onfc.ca/
Organika Coconut Vinegar with Honey - Perfect for dipping bread or for drizzling on salads. A delightful combination of tangy and sweet! http://organika.com/
BioBag - Their new product is an entirely biodegradable cling film (which is really cool when you think about it -- taking your cling film and putting it in your composter instead of the garbage), but it was the aerated compost basket is the thing that caught my eye. http://biobag.no/
One Degree Organic Foods - The most forward-looking item at the show was from a bread/flour/seeds company from British Columbia that has the audacity (that's a good thing) to put a QR code on every tasty product that takes you to a webpage where you can find out the provenance of every ingredient in that food. Organika's Coconut Nectar Vinegar, which was intended to be in the welcome bags, but which was being distributed at their booth, was absolutely delicious, I stopped by the booth several times to 'sample' it.
Sapino freshness lozenges, remind me of Sen Sens, which I loved as a child and still buy whenever I can find them.
Ontario Natural Organic Mushroom Soup, was delicious. A product I would recommend to anyone who does not make their own soups, or who normally does, but is crunched for time and wants something worthy. The website tells us the name of the couple that makes the soup, Caroline Pilon and Josh Whitehead, which is a charming touch.
I also love the Organic Virgin Hazelnut Oil from Emile Noel, made from toasted nuts, with a lovely, very rich, fresh taste and wonderful aroma, that promises to lead to some excellent new recipes. Stay tuned.
Finally, 23 Degrees, a local coffee micro-roastery. As someone who religiously begins her day with a fresh roast, I truly appreciated the delicious and subtle flavours of this coffee, which I made last as long as I possibly could, savouring the rich aromas... and the buzz.
