Prevention:
If you have a family history of hypercholesterolemia, you should have your health care professional monitor your Low Density Lipoprotein levels to determine the proper course of action. On your own, you can maintain a diet low in saturated fats and high in unsaturated fats and implement a proper exercise regimen.
Signs:
* a strong family history of familial hypercholesterolemia or early heart attack
* elevated and therapy-resistant levels of LDL in either or both parents
* xanthelasmas (cholesterol deposits in the eyelids)
* chest pain (angina) associated with coronary artery disease
* evidence of obesity
