Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Photo: Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) This small perennial shrub makes an excellent container shrub as it has both decorative and medicinal uses.

Simply brushing up against this plant releases a heady fragrance, one that is common to perfumes, lotions and bath accessories. The scent alone is therapeutic, and is one of the most common aromatherapeutic oils - even for home use.

Lavender is also an efficient topical disinfectant for wounds, and the tea is detoxifying.

WARNING: Lavender can trigger seizures in epileptics.
