Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)
Photo: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Lemongrass has long been known to help repel insects, but that is only one of the many uses it has.

A fairly common element in Asian cooking, this herb is a delight to have in the house over the winter months. In our northern climes, it will never reach the 3 metres high that it does in tropical regions, but it will still attain a lovely stature of one metre. You may want to keep that in mind while planning your container garden.

Cook with the tender white part, but use the rest for your infusions; teas will help with a variety of ailments including fatigue, jet lag, sore throats, indigestion, headaches and stress-induced illnesses.

Applied topically, it helps with acne, athlete's foot, and as a natural pet product to help repel fleas and ticks.
