Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides)
In the same family as the Barberry, this plant is also known as Papoose Root. A perennial that can reach almost a metre high, it is a colourful plant with a purplish stem and greenish, yellow and purple flowers. The root decoction is taken as a tea, usually by pregnant women late in the pregnancy, right before birth. It is considered a uterine tonic.

Used for:

  • Promotes menstruation
  • Labour (Pregnancy)

Lore:

First Nations Chippewas used it as a form of birth control, whereas other tribes used it to help ease labour.
