General Stats on Alternative Healthcare use in Canada

Stats Canada results expected in another month or so

2009-02-02 We're looking forward to the stats that should come out within the next couple of months to see if the trend toward the increased acceptance and usage of complementary and alternative therapies continues. People are using it in conjunction with regular health practices to maintain health and improve specific conditions.

Every five years Stats Canada releases the results of the National Population Health Survey (NPHS).

In 1998, the results had 17% of Canadians (3.8 million) reporting having used the services of an alternative or complementary practitioner. By 2003 that number was about 20% (5.4 million).

Unfortunately, the numbers are skewed toward those with higher incomes (26% of those in the highest income bracket vs. 13% of those in the lowest) and higher education. More women than men report using the services of a complementary or alternative therapist as well -- and usage is higher in Western Canada than in the rest of the country.
